A Torch in His Heart by Anna Belfrage @abelfrageauthor @Annecater #ATorchInHisHeart #RandomThingsTour

In the long lost ancient past, two men fought over the girl with eyes like the Bosporus under a summer sky. It ended badly. She died. They died.

Since then, they have all tumbled through time, reborn over and over again. Now they are all here, in the same place, the same time and what began so long ago must finally come to an end.

Ask Helle Madsen what she thinks about reincarnation and she’ll laugh in your face. Besides, Helle has other stuff to handle, what with her new, exciting job in London and her drop-dead but seriously sinister boss, Sam Woolf. And then one day Jason Morris walks into her life and despite never having clapped eyes on him before, she recognises him immediately. Very weird. Even more weird is the fact that Sam and Jason clearly hate each other’s guts. Helle’s life is about to become extremely complicated and far too exciting…

Where to start? I adore fantasy, rarely do I find a very well written adult fantasy novel, however Anna has delivered just that. I loved this book from the very opening pages. Helle and Jason met 3000 years before, it ended badly and now they have a second chance. There is just one big problem in their way, Sam Woolf.

The story mainly focuses on the three main characters of Helle, Jason and Sam. I sometimes find women in adult fantasy to be a little lack luster but here Anna has created a female lead I could really get behind. She is strong, independent and prepared to question what is going on around her. Not just follow meekly along. I also apricated the way she handled the information about past life’s. She didn’t just accept it, she went through a proper process of trying to understand it all.

Ohh Jason – I’ve developed a book crush. A strong, intelligent man with an ability to create fire with his hands. What’s not to love? He’s a wanderer, people who processed magic that was used for healing. Over the years people lost the magic but in all his life’s he is still born with it. I would have loved to have learnt more about the wanderer’s, perhaps that is coming in another book.

Don’t be surprised when you develop a deep dislike of Sam as soon as his name flitters across the page. That man has no redeeming features. His only aim to pocess Helle, break her even. He manipulates and uses people to his own ends. I do love a proper antagonist, it makes me route for the other side all the more.

What I really liked is the characters are multi-faceted, I got drawn in because it was so easy to get to know them.

A vast majority of the book takes place in London with all the sights and sounds that we are use to. My favourite parts though were the descriptions of the place that Helle and Jason used to live. So beautifully described, Anna seems to be able to weave some magic so you feel you are in that place with them. The scents were the most acute to me. I loved those scenes.

Lets talk about sex:

This is most definitely an adult book. The sex scenes between Helle and Jason are intense and passionate. Not overly graphic, just the right amount of detail to make you want to fan yourself while reading. There were a couple of scenes where I felt like I was intruding they were so intimate. I will say at this point that the book also deals with non consensual sex, which is necessary for the story but is hard to read. It is not described, more inferred but in some ways that makes it more disturbing.

Final thoughts:

This book is intense, dark and sexy. It has a fabulous pace to it, this book pulled me in and didn’t let go. I would love to read a book based in the time that Helle and Jason first met, not a prequal as their story is well covered. One that explains the magics and origins – please Anna? I will most definitely be picking up the next one in the series as soon as it out. I don’t put star ratings on my reviews but if I did this would be 5 star all the way.

Many thanks to Anne Carter for inviting me on the tour, to Anna for writing such a fabulous book and for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Author Bio:

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a professional time-traveller. As such a profession does not exist, she settled for second best and became a financial professional with two absorbing interests, namely history and writing. These days, Anna combines an exciting day-job with a large family and her writing endeavours.

Her first series, The Graham Saga, is set in 17th century Scotland and Virginia/Maryland. It tells the story of Matthew and Alex, two people who should never have met – not when she was born three hundred years after him. With this heady blend of time-travel, romance, adventure, high drama and historical accuracy, Anna hopes to entertain and captivate, and is more than thrilled when readers tell her just how much they love her books and her characters. There are eight books in the series so far, but Anna is considering adding one or two more…

Presently, Anna is hard at work with her next project, a series set in the 1320s featuring Adam de Guirande, his wife Kit, and their adventures and misfortunes in connection with Roger Mortimer’s rise to power. The King’s Greatest Enemy is a series where passion and drama play out against a complex political situation, where today’s traitor may be tomorrow’s hero, and the Wheel of Fortune never stops rolling.
